لا أحلىا ولا أجمل من أن تلبس المرأة أغلى ما في الوجود لديها، ونعني فلذة كبدها، ملبوساً من صنع يديها، وبديع فنها، وهذا الكتاب يسعى لتشجيع هذه الهواية، هواية الخياطة، حيث جاء ليكون عوناً لمن عندها الغبة في الإقدام على الخياطة بخطى ثابتة وسهلة، لتزهو بثيابها وثياب أحبابها وتفخر بما تصنع يداها.
لقد باتت الخياطة اليوم من أهم المشاكل التي تعترض الفتاة وربة الأسرة، بعدما تفاقمت أعباء الحياة وزادت تكاليفها زيادة مخيفة أصبح معها شراء الأليسة الجاهزة أو خياطتها خارج المنزل يفوق قدرة الأسر. لذلك انصرف الجهد إلى وضع هذا الكتاب "ألف باء الخياطة" ليكون عوناً للسيدة على خياطة ملابسها وملابس أولادها بأخف التكاليف وأقلها نفقة.
ولقد قصد في هذا الكتاب أن يكون سهل العبارة، واضح الأسلوب، وافي الشرح، لتستطيع السيدة مهما كانت درجة ثقافتها أن تلم بدقائق هذا الفن، وتتطور معه كما تشاء لها مقدرتها على استنباط الموديلات والتفنن في تفصيلها وخياطتها.
ولعله من المفيد أن نذكر أن المؤلف لم يكتف بالاعتماد على خبراته وتجاربه العملية في فن الخياطة، بل رجع إلى كثير من كتب الخياطة الفرنسية والإنكليزية والألمانية والإيطالية، واختار منها ما يوافق ذوقه الشرقي وطبيعة بلادنا في سهولة ويسر.
بدأ الكتاب بفصل حدد فيه أدوات الخياطة ولوازمها، ثم انتقل في الفصل الثاني إلى موضوع آخر فتحدث عن مبادئ التفصيل، والطريقة المثلى لتفصيل التنورة والسروال، والثوب، والياقة، والأكمام، والكشاكش، ثم أسهب في الحديث عن مبادئ الخياطة والدرز على الماكينة.
وقد خصص فصلاً خاصاً لفن الكي وحل مشاكله، وطرق المحافظة على القماش الطبيعي والمصنع، وفصلاً آخر للتطريز وفنونه، ما جعل الفصلين الأخيرين للكلام على اختيار الألوان التي تناسب المرأة السمراء والشقراء على السواء، لما لهذا الاختيار من دور في اكتمال مظهر السيدة رشاقةً وجمالاً، وعلى كيفية اختيار المرأة العصرية لثيابها.
