مال بعض الباحثين الاجتماعيين إلى استحداث تخصص جديد مرتبط بالتخصص الأم (علم الاجتماع العام) يسمى بعلم الاجتماع التطبيقي، الذي لا يعني مناهج البحث وطرقه أو كيفية استخدامه بل مواضيع ومشاكل وحالات اجتماعية معاصرة مترجمة إلى بحوث سهلة الفهم بعيدة عن التعقيدات الأكاديمية في تعابيرها ومصطلحاتها.
وعلى الرغم من قصر الفترة الزمنية التي لا تتعدى الربع قرن، إلا أن رواده وباحثيه استطاعوا أن يجمعوا ما يستطيعون جمعه لجعله مادة متخصصة وقد ترجمنا بعضاً منها وأردفنا عليها بعض الأحداث العربية وعقبنا على الأعمال التي أوردناها، فوضعناها في أربعة فصول حيث تناول الفصل الأول نشأة علم الاجتماع التطبيقي وبداية نموه، وعتكف الفصل الثاني على استجلاء كينونته التي تبلورت بعسر وليس بيسر، وانطوى الفصل الثالث على تقديم العقبات والصعوبات التي واجهها ويواجهها كحقل جديد يشق طريقه بين فكي رحى، الأول علم الاجتماع النظري والثاني أصحاب القرار، بينما اختص الفصل الرابع بمنهجيته التي تميزت بإبراز استخدام ما هو مهمل في منهجية علم الاجتماع العام مثل المؤشرات الاجتماعية والتوصيات.
