هذا واحد من كتب إيريك فروم الشهيرة، يثير الآن الإهتمام أضعاف ما أثاره عند صدوره، وهو يقوم على المقدّمة المنطقية التي فحواها أن المجتمع إذ يكون له تأثيره الإيجابي أو السلبي في أفراده، فلا بد من دراسة التأثير الرافد والقامع في الفرد، وسبر الأوضاع الإنسانية في المجتمع الحديث.
والكتاب يركز من منظوره السيكولوجي على الوظيفة المحدثة للمرض النفسي في هذا المجتمع، وهو الأمر المهمل في الدراسات المعاصرة.
ويمكن إجمال أبرز أسباب الإهتمام بهذا الكتاب بكونه أول كتاب لمحلل من المحللين النفسيين الكبار يدرس الأحوال المرضيّة للمجتمع الحديث؛ وهذا هو الموضوع الذي أشار فرويد إلى أهميته في كتابه "الحضارة ومنغّصاتها"، لكنه تهيّب العوائق التي تقف أمام مهمة كهذه، وتوقّع أن يغامر أحدهم يوماً "في هذا البحث في الحالة المرضيّة للجماعات المتمدّنة"، ثم إن كتاب (المجتمع السوري) قد جاء بعد النجاح المدويّ الذي حققه فروم في كتب سابقة له، ولا سيما منها "اللغة المنسيّة".
فهذا الكتاب يُظهر الأئساق الداخلي والخارجي، والقوة التفسيرية، وقابلية الإمتحان، والقدرة النبوئيّة، والوضوح في معالجة المشكلات العميقة والمعقّدة، ويتابع فروم في (المجتمع السوي) نقده لفرويد، ويقدّم أساسيات ما يدعوه "التحليل النفسي الإنساني"، الذي عُدّ الثورة الثالثة في علم النفس.
