المسلمون مقتنعون، بقناعتهم الروحية وبمعرفة ماضيهم المجيد، بثراء وبمرونة المبادئ الملهمة للإسلام. ما زال مطلوباً منهم أن يستخلصوا من التجريد كل الجوهر العميق للحقيقة القرآنية لنشرها في الأمة الإسلامية الحديثة. عندئذ يغدو الخطاب أكثر دقة. من هنا فإن هذا الكتاب، ذو الطابع العام، يسعى للوقوف على مسافة متساوية بين المثالية والواقع، في نقطة تتداخل فيها الأنظمة والتلاوين أكثر مما تمتزج. وهو يقتصر على تحليل بعض مشاكل العالم الحديث، التي اختيرت في مجموع أكثر اتساعاً وتعقيداً. ويبقى ملحاً استخلاص صورة الإسلام، كدين، والأمة الإسلامية ككيان ثقافي، من مرآة الغرب المهمشة. هذا الهم كان المحور الذي من أجله تمّ انعقاد المائدة المستديرة لمؤتمرها العام، المنعقد في بلغراد في 10 و11 أكتوبر 1980. شكلت تلك المائدة حواراً حقيقياً التي في أعقابها تمّ صدور هذا الكتاب. وقد ضم هذا المؤتمر حوالي ثلاثين مشاركاً أتوا من جميع أنحاء العالم. وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن الموضوع الذي عالجته المائدة المستديرة لا يتعلق بانتشار الإسلام جغرافياً، بل بقدرته، باعتباره مشاركاً على إلهام الإنسان المعاصر حل المشاكل الحيوية التي يطرحها عليه عالم اليوم.
