-اقتربي، وارفعي قدميك فوق النار... ضعيها على اليورسولين، خافت أن توسخ المدفأة فأضاف:
-الأشياء الجميلة لا تفسد شيئاً.
عند ذلك حاولت أن تستدر عاطفته، فأخذت تشرح له عوزها، وأشجانها استدار نحوها دون أن ينقطع عن الأكل، حتى لامست ركبتاه حذاءيها وقال أنه يعرف كل شيء، لا سيما وهي المرأة الأنيقة، لكن حين طلبت منه ألف فرنك زُمّ شفتيه معتذراً، لأنه لم يكن وكيلها من قبل وقال:
-لماذا لم تأت إلي من قبل؟
-لا أعلم.
إذاً؟ هل كنت أخيفك إلى هذا الحد؟ كان علي أنا أن أشكو، لا أنت. أنا مخلص لك بالرغم من تعارفنا الآن. أرجو أن تثقي به.
ومد يده، وأخذ يدها فغمرها بالقبل. ثم وضعها على ركبته وراح بعبث بأصابعها في نعومة، وهو يناجيها بأرق العبارات، كان صوته يئن كخرير جدول وتقدمت يداه تحرها ليداعب بها ذراعها، وأحست بأنفاسه المتهدجة تلفح خدها فقفزت من مكانها قائلة:
-سيدي ما زلت أنتظر.
فأجاب وقد علاه شحوب مفاجئ -تنتظرين ماذا؟
-المال.
-ولكن.
وسرعان ما استجاب لرغبة هائلة فقال:
وزحف نحوها على ركبته مضيفاً:
-بحق السماء أبقي، فأنا أحبك.
