إزدادت عناية الباحثين في السنوات الأخيرة بدراسة الجانب الحضاري في قصة التاريخ البشري، فظهر كثير من المؤلفات التي عالجت تطور الحضارة البشرية في مختلف العصور، فضلاً عن تاريخ العلوم والفكر الإنساني منذ القدم حتى اليوم.
وسرعان ما تكشفت حقيقة مهمة أخذت تزداد وضوحاً كلما إزداد البحث عمقاً، هي أن الفكر الإسلامي قام في العصور الوسطى بدور كبير فعّال في بناء الحضارة البشرية، وأن هذا الدور البنَّاء لم يقتصر على مجرد النقل والحفظ، بل تعدى ذلك إلى الإبتكار والتجديد والإكتشاف، والإنتقال بالحضارة البشرية من درجة إلى درجة أخرى أسمى بكثير مما كان عليه الحال من قبل، ولم يلبث أن أعترف بهذه الحقيقة وأكدها عدد كبير من رجال الفكر والعلم في الغرب، فنادوا بأن فضل العرب على الغرب أعظم من أن ينكر، وبأن أثر المدينة الإسلامية في الحضارة الغربية أكبر من ان يجحد، وبأن الوقت قد حان في العصور الحديثة - عصور حرية الفكر والرأي - لكي يتحرر الفكر الأوروبي من تزمت العصور الوسطى ونظرتها المغرضة، تلك النظرة التي فرضتها الكنيسة الغربية على الناس فرضاً، والتي صورت المسلمين - ظلماً وإفتراءً - في صورة هُدّام الحضارة ومقوضيها، وهم في حقيقة أمرهم ليسوا إلا بناتها وحماتها.
يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى بيان الأثر الذي تركته المدنية الإسلامية في الحضارة الغربية، حيث عمل المؤلف على توضيح المؤثرات المختلفة التي تركها المسلمون في حضارة الغرب، والتي أفاد الغربيون وما زالوا يفيدون منها.
