في هذا الكتاب يلقي الأستاذ "طلال حرب" الأضواء على ظاهرة الصعاليك التي انتشرت في العصر الجاهلي، والتي انبثق عنها شعراء هاجموا الأغنياء الأشحاء في مجتمع لا يخضع لقانون، وهم يشعرون أنهم أصحاب حق، ومن هؤلاء "الشنفري" الذي كان من أشهر الصعاليك في العصر الجاهلي ومن ألمع شعرائهم، ومع ذلك، إختلف الرواة، في إسمه، فقيل إنه: ثابت بن أوس الأزدي، أو عمرو بن مالك الأزدي ما يهمنا في هذا المجال ما تركه الشنفري شعراً لكن معظمه ضاع كما يقول الأستاذ طلال حرب وبقي منه القليل، وهذا التقليل يدل على شاعريته الفذة "فإذا كان عروة بن الورد قد تزعم جماعات الصعاليك، فإن الشنفري هو زعيمهم شعرياً بدون مزاحم. ذلك أن الشنفري لم يطلعنا وحسب على أسرار حياة الصعاليك وأهدافهم، وأساليب تصعلكهم... بل لقد إرتفع في تصويره هذه الحياة إلى مستوى الخلق الفني الموهوب، حتى أضحت لاميته واحدة من أهم وثائق الفن والحياة المعبرة عن نموذج المعيشة الجاهلية".
وفي هذا السياق يعرض الكتاب لاختلاف الرواة حول نسبة "اللامية" لشاعر جاهلي من الصعاليك سواء أكان الشنفري أو تأبط شراً أو لشعراء جاهليين أخرين، مع عرض لديوان الشنفري وشاعرين آخرين من شعراء الصعاليك هما: "الشيلك بن السلكة"، و"عمرو بن براق" مع باقة من أشعارها.
