هذه رسالة (العقود اللؤلؤية في تاريخ الدولة الطولونية) للعلامة الحافظ محمد بن علي بن طولون الدمشقي تناول فيها تاريخ الدولة الطولونية وهي من أوائل الدول التي استقلت عن الخلافة العباسية في بغداد بعد انفصال دولة بني أمية في الأندلس.
وقد اعتمد المؤلف في تاريخه هذا على كتاب (النجوم الزاهرة في أخبار مصر والقاهرة) لابن تغري بردي مع الاستفادة من المصادر الأخرى في تبيين غامض أو تفصيل مجمل.
ولابن طولون رسالة أخرى في نفس الموضوع وهي (حور العيون في تاريخ أحمد بن طولون) لخصها بـ(سيرة أحمد بن طولون) للبلوي مع زيادات عليها غير أن هذه الرسالة تختص بمؤسس الدولة وهو أحمد بن طولون -وهي مفقودة- أما الرسالة التي بين يدينا فهي أشمل وأكمل فقد أرخ فيها للدولة الطولونية منذ قيامها حتى سقوطها.
ورسالة (العقود اللؤلؤية) قد لا تضيف جديداً لمصادرنا التاريخية المتقدمة كتاريخ الطبري أو "المسعودي" أو ابن الأثير وغيرها من التواريخ -خاصة في التاريخ السياسي- فالمؤلف ناقل عمن سبقوه مع اعتبار (النجوم الزاهرة) هو المصدر الرئيسي كما قدمت. لكن الإضافة الحقيقية تكمن في عدة أمور أحدها يختص بسيرة المؤلف الذاتية والأمور الأخرى في تاريخ الحضارة الإسلامية.
أما الأمر المختص بسيرة المؤلف ولم تتطرق له المصادر التي ترجمته ولم يذكره هو في سيرته التي سماها (الفلك المشحون في أحوال محمد بن طولون) فهو أنه قد عرض عليه أن يتولى النظر على الجامع الطولوني في القاهرة لكنه رفض ذلك وذكر في هذه الرسالة أنه سيذكر السبب في امتناعه عن ذلك عندما يؤلف عن سيرة (أحمد بن طولون).
أما الأمور التي تتعلق بتاريخ الحضارة الإسلامية:
1-تعيينه لطبيب مختص يراعي أمور المصلين في جامعة يوم الجمعة لكثرة الازدحام الذي قد يؤدي إلى إصابة رواد المسجد فيكون الطبيب قريباً منهم.
2-عمل له بعض الأطباء سريراً له مواصفات خاصة تجد وصفه وفوائده في ثنايا هذه الرسالة.
3-طريقة بناء مئذنة جامعة الكبير وورود فكرته العبقرية في ذهنه. هذه بعض الفوائد المستقاة من هذه الرسالة.
