يضم الكتاب الأعمال الشعرية الكاملة للشاعر بلند الحيدري وهي دواوينه، خفقة الطين، أغاني المدينة الميتة، خطوات في القرية، رحلة الحروف الصفّر، حوار عبر الأبعاد الثلاثة، أغاني الحارس المتعب، إلى بيروت مع تحياتي وأبواب إلى البيت الضيق، وتختصر الدرب هذه الأعمال حملت من طياتها تجربة شعرية رائدة فتح من خلالها الباب مشرعاً على تجربة الشعر الحديث، وقد قيل بأن صوته الشعري يمكن تجريده على أساس أنه صوت غنائي، ويجيب عن ذلك بأن من يراجع تجاربه وللوهلة الأولى يجد بأن صوته يتخذ إطاره ضمن مناخ غنائي وذلك... متأت عن أسلوبه في طرح القصيدة عبر شكلية تتميز بقصر النفس والوقوف بها خلال ثلاث محطات... وهي أن يكون لها أول ووسط وآخر، يحدد عبرها نمو القصيدة العضوي إلا أن هذه الشكلية الظاهرية لا تؤكد انفصاله عن ميزة ظلت مواكبة لكل ما أنتجه عقب ديوانه الأول، أي استمراراً من "أغاني المدينة الميتة" (1951) وهي التأكيد على الصراع الدرامي، ومقدمان هذا الصراع الدرامي هي أن يلتمس الشاعر تجربته الشعرية ضمن بعدين رئيسيين، الأول منهما يعبر عن تطلع الشاعر في الذات المعاصرة، والثاني منهما يرسم تحرك الواقع المضاد.
ويقول الشاعر بأنه جاد في الاعتقاد بأن أي انفصام هذين البعدين في التجربة الشعرية تسقطها، أما في الدعائية السمحة التي عرفت أيام "جدانوف" أو الفوتوغرافية الميتة والتي ألف الكثير منها في الوصفيات القديمة. ويضيف بأن أخذه للعملية الشعرية على هذا المنوال، دفعه إلى استخدام الأصوات الداخلية المتناقضة لتأكيد الصراع الدرامي عبر تطلعه وعبر تحرك الواقع. وقد يحمل واقع ما، جواً قاتماً كثيراً ما ساق البعض إلى اتهامه بكونه واحداً من دعاة الأدب البائس، ويقول الشاعر بأن الحقيقة ليست كذلك، لأن من يحمل من شعره تطلباً لقضية ما، لا يمكن أن يتهم شعره باليأس، غير أن على الناقد أن يرتسم اتجاهات الأصوات المتحركة في العمل الشعري لإدراك القيمة كنتيجة لا كجملة أو صورة جزئية فيه.
