هذا الكتاب بحث منهجي لتحقيق نصوص التراث، يستعرض تاريخ هذا الموضوع، ليرسم خطوات نشأته، و بلوغه مرتبة العلم ذي الأصول و المفاهيم وأساليب التنفيذ. وقد اكتشف المؤلف، من خلال ذلك، أن التحقيق التراثي علم عربي إسلامي: عربي نسباً ودماً وإسلامي روحاً وفكراً وعملاً.
و من هذا المنطلق، عالج البحث أحداث التنظير والتطبيق، في المصادر الإسلامية والنصوص الخطية بالمكتبات، من المؤلفات والنسخ التراثية، فاستطاع أن يستقطب أصولاً مقررة، بين العلماء والطلاب لخدمة التراث الكتابي، وإعطائه صفة علم متميز، يعتمده المرء في إخراج النصوص، بوعي وخبرة ونجاح.
وقد توزعت هذه الأصول على مراحل ثلاث: التحقيق النظري، و التحقيق العملي، والمتممات. ثم بسطت تنظيراً وتطبيقاً، مع وثائق لبيان ما يمثل الواقع المتقن في التاريخ، و ما يوضح الصور البدائية لدى المستشرقين و أتباعهم، والنماذج المثالية الرائقة في المحققات المنشورة. وكان الاعتماد في ذلك على ثلاثة مصادر أيضاً: التنظير العربي في المصنفات، والتطبيقات الإجرائية في النسخ الخطية، والخبرة العملية بالنشر والتعليم والتدريب والتحقيق.
ولقد استطعنا أن نكتشف حقيقة غمرها المستشرقون، بأمواج من العولمات، ونعيد لهذا الموضوع منزلة العلم المقرر، بما فيه من أصول وإجراءات للتحقيق والتوثيق، واضحة مشرقة وافية. وبهذا نرد للعلم أصالته و حقيقته، بعد ما جرى عليه من التزييف، ونقدم للإخوة الراغبين في خدمة التراث نهجاً ينير السبيل، في إخراجه بالثوب الإسلامي، بعيداً عن بدائية الاستشراق، نوثق و نحقق ما يكون لحضارتنا وجهاً رائقاً ودوداً، ولمستقبلنا سبيلاً سديداً، ولنا في الدنيا والآخرة فوزاً مجيداً.
