لهذا الكتاب غايات جمة: أولاها: غاية إيمانية دينية، وذلك من أجل التعرف على عقوبات رب العالمين سبحانه، حين تصيب البشر بذنوبهم. فنأخذ العبرة ونتعظ، كي لا تصيبنا إحداها. وثانيتها: غاية معرفية، وذلك بعرض الكوارث الطبيعية منذ القدم حتى العصر الحاضر. وثالثتها: غاية فنية ذوقية، حين يعبر الشعر والنثر عن الأحاسيس الصادقة والمعاناة الحقيقية، يدعمها الخيال المحلق والأسلوب الرائع.
وهكذا فقد ذكر المؤلف الطبيعة في القرآن الكريم بدءاً من كارثة قوم نوح وانتهاء بكارثة قوم شعيب حسب الترتيب الزمني لحدوثها. ثم انتقل إلى الكوارث الطبيعية في التاريخ العربي والعالمي. ثم تكلم عن كوارث القرن العشرين وخصص بالذكر كوارث عامي 1997 و1998 وتوسع في كارثة تركيا لختم بها القرن العشرين، كما توسع في كارثة الجزائر أولى كوارث القرن الحادي والعشرين. وأخيراً ذكر أثر هذه الكوارث على الأدب العربي شعره ونثره سواء كان ذلك في الماضي أو الحاضر.
