تظافرت إعتبارات ودوافع ذاتية وموضوعية، لتؤسس لدينا إقتناعاً بموضوع هذا الكتاب، ولتمنحنا الرغبة والإرادة في إقتحام مغالقه وكشف كوامنه، ولعل أبرز هذه الدوافع إهتمامنا "بالبلاغة الحجاجية" بوصفها منطلق البلاغة القديمة مع أرسطو، وسمتها المميزة، ولكونها أيضاً مصدر إنبعاث "البلاغة الجديدة" التي ظهرت عند شايم بيرلمان، وزميلته تيتيكا على سبيل المثال بعد عصور طويلة انحصر الإهتمام فيها على الحلية والمحسنات الأسلوبية؛ حتى أضحت "بلاغة ضيقة أو مختزلة" حسب تعبير جيرار جنيت، و"بلاغة ميتة" بتعبير رولان بارت.
أما إختيارنا للحكاية المثلية عند ابن المقفع وإتخاذها مجالاً تطبيقياً لبلاغة الإقناع، فإنه يعود أساساً إلى إيماننا بأن لها مكانتها بين الأجناس السردية القديمة من قبيل؛ المقامة، والرحلة، والحكايتين العجائبية والشعبية، إضافة إلى أن أغلب الدراسات التي جعلت من حكاية الحيوان موضوعاً لها، اكتفت بالتجنيس، وفي أحسن الأحوال درستها دراسة بنيوية أو سميائية، حيث إنها لم تتجاوز ذلك إلى النظر في خصائص التخاطب الأدبي، التي صيغت في قوالب فنية راقية، وهو ما جعل تلك الدراسات تبدو تكراراً لبعضها البعض.
كما أردنا من خلال هذا الإختيار أن نبتعد بمقاربتنا الحجاجية عن الخطبة، والمناظرة، والرسالة؛ من حيث هي أجناس حجاجية بارزة، لنفتح المجال لجنس آخر قد يُعتقد أنه أقل خطابية.
أما المنهج الذي اتبعناه، فقد حاولنا فيه، قدر الإمكان، أن يتحاور مع النصوص بنوع من التأمل ويعمل على تأويلها، لكن لا يُقولها ما لم تقل، أو يلوي عنقها ليّاً متعسفاً لا تعززه القرائن الدالة، محاولين بذلك بلورة خطاب جديد حول نصوص كليلة ودمنة؛ بيد أن هذا الخطاب يسعى أساساً إلى صياغة أسس "بلاغة الحكاية المثلية" إنطلاقاً من إمكاناتها الجمالية، وما توحي به أبعادها التداولية.
