الكتاب بشكل عام أشبه بكتب الحماسة التي اختار الشعراء فيها بعض الأشعار حول المراثي والمدائح، والسيف والرمح والدرع والأطلال...
كما أن فيه كمية هائلة من الأشعار، وقد لا تكون الكثير من هذه الأشعار موجودة في دواوين أصحابها، فهو من ناحية مادة خصبة لرفد الدواوين الشعرية بالإستدراكات التي لم ترد في دواوين أصحابها وهذا يدل على أن المؤلف اطلع على نسخ أصلية من دواوين الشعر لم تكن متاحة لغيره.
ولعلها جاءت من خلال النسخ الخاصة بالمؤلف، وبالإضافة إلى كل ذلك انفرد الكتاب بعدد كبير من الشعراء الذي أتى الشاعر بمقطوعات شعرية لهم، ولم ترد أسماؤهم، ولا مقطوعاتهم في أي مصدر من المصادر الأخرى، وهذه ميزة امتاز بها أيضاً هذا الكتاب.
