هذا كتاب عن تطور الفكر التربوي، يمثل محاولة متواضعة تضيف إلى المحاولات السابقة لأساتذة أجلاّء، بل وعظماء في الفكر والإبداع والإقتباس التاريخي وتحليله، فهو خطوة تتلمس موضوع تطور الفكر التربوي والتي لا بدّ وأن تعرفه كل طالبة التحقت بكليات التربية للوقوف على الماضي التربوي، وإستشراق رؤية المستقبل التربوية.
ومن هنا سعى الكاتب بتغطية محتوى المقرر من خلال ثمانية فصول كانت كالآتي: اشتمل الفصل الأول على الفكر التربوي وعلاقته بالتطور الحضاري من خلال عدة مفاهيم أساسية مع دراسة للعوامل التي أثرت في حركة الفكر التربوي، ثم انتقل الفصل الأول ليوضح أهمية دراسة تطور الفكر التربوي وطرق وأساليب دراسته.
أما الفصل الثاني؛ فتناول الفكر التربوي في بلاد اليونان القديم بتوضيح الظروف المجتمعية، ثم توضح الإتجاهات التربوية لليونانيين في إسبرطة وأثينا، ثم توضيح لآراء بعض المفكرين كأفلاطون رائد الإتجاه المثالي، وأرسطو صاحب الإتجاه الواقعي.
ثم انتقل الكتاب لتناول الفصل الثالث من خلال دراسة للفكر التربوي في أوروبا في العصور الوسطى، ولأهمية الحدث والموقف أفرد الكتاب فصلاً عن التربية الإسلامية في العصور الوسطى بتوضيح الإتجاهات التربوية مع إستعراض لأهم المفكرين المسلمين ودورهم في الحفاظ على الحضارة الإنسانية، وذلك من خلال الفصل الرابع والخامس.
ثم تحدث في الفصل السادس عن التربية في العصور الحديثة بإستعراض لأهم إتجاهاتها التربوية وأهم مفكّريها، ثم تحدّث الكتاب في الفصل السابع عن الفكر التربوي في عصر الإصلاح والتنور.
واختتم الكتاب فصوله بالفصل الثامن بإستعراض الحركة البراجماتية والتربية الأمريكية وبعض مفكريها.
