الموسوعة الماثلة بين يدي القارئ تسعى للتوقُّف في محطات تاريخية لعرضها ودراسة دورها في سبيل بلورة تصوُّر تاريخي شامل حاكٍ عن واقع العلاقات بين الإسلام والعالم الغربي.
فالموسوعة، ومن خلال وصفها وتحليلها للعلاقات التي دارت بين الإسلام والغرب، تبني أسساً علمية لمقولة كون الدين بمنأى عن الكثير من الصراعات السلطوية دارت أو تدور حالياً بين المسلمين والغربيين، وهي بذلك تؤسس لإنطلاق حوار شامل وجاد وفاعل بين الأديان وبخاصة الإسلام والمسيحية؛ والشمولية النسبية في النظرة التاريخية، فلم تقتصر الدراسات على بُعد خاص بل شملت الأبعاد السياسية والعلمية والإقتصادية والإجتماعية وغيرها، فتضمّنت موضوعات من قبيل التبادل العلمي في مجال الفلسفة والرياضيات والهندسة وما شابهها من العلوم.
ومن جانب آخر، فإنّ الموسوعة لم تحصر موضوع العلاقات بالعلاقات بين الحكومات الواقعة في هذين (الغربي والإسلامي) بل تناولت العلاقة أيضاً بين شعوبهما وكذلك العلاقة بين الحكومات مع أتباعها مع الأقليات الدينية، كما أن جلّ الدراسات نظرت إلى تاريخ العلاقات بين العالم الإسلامي والعالم الغربي إلاّ أنّ بعضها نظر إلى حاضر هذه العلاقات وتناولها بالبحث والدراسة، ما يعني عدم التقيّد ببرهة تاريخية خاصّة، وإتساع مجال الدراسات إلى أكثر من ألف عام؛ وقد استخدم الكُتّاب المصادر المتنوّعة، من حيث التوجُّه الفكري، والإستعانة بكُتّاب ذوي إختصاصات وخبرات متنوّعة رفيعة في مجال تاريخ العلوم والعلاقات والإجتماع وغيرها من التخصُّصات.
