لقد اختلف اللغويون حول حقيقة وجود الترادف في اللغة بين مؤيدٍ ومعارض، فالأصمعي (ت 216هـ) روايةُ العرب وأحدُ أئمة العلم باللغة والشعر والبلدان، ألفَ كتاباً عنوانه (ما أتفقَ لفظه واختلفَ معناه)، وقد قيل له: (نراكَ شّمرتَ في الغريب يا أصمعي!...) فقال: (وكيفَ لا أشمّرُ في الغريب وقد حفظتُ للحجر سبعينَ اسماً)، وابن خالويهِ (ت 370هـ) من أكابر العلماء في النحو واللغة والقراءة والحديث، ومن كتبهِ المخطوطة (البديع في القراءات) كان يفتخر بأنه جمع للأسد خمسمائة اسم، وللحية مائتي اسم، وأنه يحفظ للسيف خمسمائة اسم، والفيروز آبادي (ت 817هـ) صاحب معجم القاموس المحيط، ألّفَ كتاباً في الترادف سمّاه (الروض المسلوف فيما له اسمان إلى ألوف).
وهناك مَنْ عارضَ الترادف من اللغويين ولم يؤيدْه، أمثال: ابن فارس (ت 360هـ) صاحب كتاب المجمل في اللغة، وأبي علي الفارسي (ت 377هــ) صاحب كتاب المسائل البغدادية في النحو، وأبي هلال العسكري (ت 395هـ) صاحب كتاب الصناعتين وغيرهم...
أما المحدثون من اللغويين العرب فقد اعترفَ بعضهم بوقوع الترادف في اللغة ومنهم: إبراهيم أنيس الذي قال: (إنّ علماء اللغات يجمعون على إمكان وقوع الترادف في أية لغة من لغات العالم)، وعلي الجارم قال: (إنّ الترادف موجود ولا سبيل إلى إنكاره).
