عرض المؤلف في هذا البحث ظاهرة لغوية شغلت كثيراً من الدارسين قديماً وحديثاً، ألا وهي ظاهرة الترادف في العربية، ومدى قبول النص القرآني فهذه الظاهرة في بيانه المعجز، وكان من الطبيعي أن ينقسم البحث إلى بابين رئيسين، يتناول أولهما الإطار النظري في دراسة ظاهرة الترادف قديماً وحديثاً، ويتناول الثاني مفردات من القرآن الكريم بالتحليل والمناقشة وفقاً لذلك الإطار النظري.
ولا شك أن البحث اللغوي في القرآن يعتمد الكثير من مصادر اللغة وعلوم القرآن في المرتبة الأولى، وذلك ما اضطلع به هذا البحث، إذ كان في مقدمة مصادره المعاجم اللغوية، ولا سيما لسان العرب لابن منظور، الذي تأخر فجمع فأوعى، ومقاييس اللغة لابن فارس، الذي اتخذ من الاشتقاق وأصول الألفاظ منهجاً فريداً بين المعاجم اللغوية، إضافة إلى ما اعتمد من كتب الفروق اللغوية، ككتاب أبي هلال، وكليات أبي البقاء، أما المصادر القرآنية فلعل أهمها المفردات في غريب القرآن، للراغب الأصفاني، ومن أهمها كذلك تفسير البحر المحيط لأبي حيان، الذي جاء متأخراً في زمانه.
