حينما يكون موضوع حديثنا عن فلسفة التاريخ، فإننا لا نكون بمنأى عن التاريخ نفسه، فإذا كان التاريخ، في ماهيته هو الوقائع التي تقدمها لنا الوثائق التي تعتبر شاهدًا على عصرها، فإن للمؤرخ عمله الخاص الذي يستلزم منه تحليل الوثائق وربطها ببعضها للوصول من خلالها إلى حكم على هذا العصر، فهناك فارق أساسي بين التاريخ والمؤرخ، وهذا الفارق هو ما يفجر مشكلات كثيرة تتعلق بكتابة التاريخ وهل يمكن أن تكون موضوعية بحيث لا يقدم لنا المؤرخ ذاته التي هي نتاج عصره وبيئته في حكمه على العصر الذي يؤرخ له؟ وذلك يستتبع الفارق بين قراءة التاريخ عبر عصوره المختلفة إذ أنه لا يمكن أن نغفل الفرق بين مؤرخي اليوم حينما يحكمون على عصر سابق وبينهم حينما يؤرخون لعصرهم، فمؤرخ اليوم لا يملك مبررات الحكم على عصره لأنه لا يزال شاهدًا على هذا العصر، وإنما من حقه الحكم على عصور سابقة بعد سرده لوقائع تلك العصور من خلال وثائق مكتوبة أو مرئية أو ما شابه ذلك من مادة التاريخ.
من هذا المنطلق يمكننا القول إنه إذا كان يجوز للمؤرخ في عصرنا أن يستغرق في عناء عمله إلى حد أن يجد فيه أفضل مكافأة لجهده الصابر فإنه لا يجوز لنا أن ننتظر من سائر الناس أن يرضوا عن هذا الوضع، ذلك لأن لهم الحق في أن يطلبوا حسابًا من المؤرخ عن استخدام حياته، وأن يبحثوا في كيفية الانتفاع بهذا التراكم من المعارف التي يكدسها دون توقف، فلابد له والحالة هذه، من أن يفكر في هذا الجهد الذي بذله، وفي النية التي عقدها عليها، وفي الخط الذي يمكنه من بلوغ غايته، وبكلمة واحدة في منفعة التاريخ.
