يعد هذا الكتاب آخر ما ألّفه غوستاف لوبون، فقد أتمّه قبل عام من وفاته، ويشتغل فيه على مفاهيم عامّة لفلسفة التاريخ؛ ونعني بها تفسير التاريخ الإنساني من وجهة نظر فلسفية. فالتاريخ، كما هو معلوم، يحوي مجموعة من المبادئ العامة التي تُكوّن فلسفته؛ والتي قد تتبدل بشكل طردي مع تغير تلك المبادئ.ويحاول المؤلف عبر الكتاب تغيير الأفكار الكلاسيكية عن حوادث الحياة القديمة من خلال تحليلات تناقش الأفكار القديمة حول تاريخ الحياة وأصل الخليقة وتطورها فضلاً عن وضع مناهج تتمثل الوقائع وتستقرئ خلاصاتها على وفق أسس علميّة رصينة.إن "فلسفة التاريخ" هو محاولة في الإعانة على فهم الحوادث التاريخية فهما صحيحاً خالياً من التلفيق واالكذب، مثلما هو محاولة لفهم المجتمع البشري ونموه وعوامل انحلاله واندثاره.يتعالق الكتاب بشكل جادِ مع فلسفة الطبيعة وعلاقتها بالتاريخ والتي يرى الكاتب أنها تختلف جذرياً عن باقي الفلسفات المكرسة.
