"رأيت وأنا في السادسة من عمري، صورة رائعة في كتاب عن "الغابة العذراء" يدعى "قصص حقيقية" وكانت الصورة تمثل ثعباناً (بوا) يبتلع وحشاً.
وقرأت في الكتاب: "إن الثعابين تبتلغ فريستها بكاملها، من دون أن تمضغها، فإذا ابتلعتها عجزت عن كل حركة ونامت مدة ستة أشهر حتى تنتهي من هضمها.
وبعد ا، فكرت ملياً فيما يقع في الغابات من الحوادث أخذت قلماً فيه رصاصة ملونة وخططت أول رسم رسمته.
ثم رأيت باكورة فني الكبار من الناس (اعني الكبار في السن) وسألتهم قائلاً: أما يخيفكم هذا الرسم؟
فأجابوا: متى كانت القبعة تخيف الناس؟
ما كان رسمي يمثل قبعة بل ثعباناً يهضم فيلاً. ثم رسمت باطن الثعبان عسى أن يفهم الكبار فإنهم في حاجة دائمة إلى الإيضاح. وكان رسمي الثاني كما ترى: فلما أبرزته لكبار الناس نصحوا لي بأن أدع جانباً رسم الثعابين من الخارج والباطن وقالوا: الأفضل لك أن تعني بدرس الجغرافية والتاريخ والحساب وقواعد اللغة. فأهملت، وأنا في السادسة من عمري، مستقبلاً باهراً في فن التصوير لأن رسمي الأول والثاني لم يروقا كبار الناس. إن هؤلاء الكبار لا يدركون شيئاً من تلقاء نفوسهم فلا بد للصغار من أن يشرحوا لهم ويطيلوا الشرح ويكرروا. ولا يخفي ما في هذا من التعب والعناء."
