تعد الأسرة المؤسسة الاجتماعية الوحيدة التي حافظت على معالمها الأساسية من حيث تنظيمها، وشكلها، ووظائفها، وبخاصة تلك المتعلقة بنقل الإرث البيولوجي والاجتماعي والثقافي والاقتصادي، فالتفجر السكاني الذي شهده العالم في القرن العشرين لم يشهده أي عصر من قبل، من حيث تضاعف عدد سكان العالم أكثر من ثلاث مرات (3242 مرة) أي مقدار (3992 مليون نسمة) ومهمة هذا البحث الذي نقلب صفحاته هو إلقاء مزيد من الأضواء على موضوع تنظيم الأسرة فكراً وواقعاً وطموحاً من خلال إشكالية التفجر السكاني.
بدأ المؤلف بحثه بدراسة ميدانية استطلاعية قام بإعدادها في عام (1992) على السيدات اللواتي يمارسن تنظيم الأسرة في مدينة حلب، بالتعاون مع الجمعيات المتخصصة. أما القسم النظري والذي يعطي الجانب الثاني من الدراسة فقد جاء بشكل محاضرات ألقاها الباحث، ودارت حول تاريخ وفكر وأهداف تنظيم الأسرة، والخصائص الديموغرافية (الحيوية والاجتماعية والأسرية) لسكان محافظة السويداء، وذلك بالاستناد إلى المجموعات الإحصائية الخاصة بالمحافظة منذ الاستقلال وحتى (1992). والهدف من هذه الدراسة هو كشف النقاب بموضوعية وحيادية، على قضية من أهم قضايا المجتمع، قضية تنظيم الخلية الأساسية لبناء المجتمع.
