سعى المؤلف في هذا الكتاب تأليف تاريخ جامع لأخبار ملوك الشرق والغرب وما بينهما، يأتي فيه بالحوادث والكائنات في أول الزمان، متتابعة يتلو بعضها بعضاً إلى وقتنا هذا؛ ويقول المؤلف عن كتابه هذا عالم يجتمع في كتاب واحد، فابتدأت بالتاريخ الكبير الذي صنفه الإمام "أبو جعفر الطبري" إذ هو الكتاب المعول عند الكافة عليه، [و] المرجوع عند الإختلاف إليه، فأخذت ما فيه من جميع تراجمه، فلما فرغت منه أخذت غيره من التواريخ المشهورة فطالعتها وأضفت منها إلى ما نقلته من تاريخ الطبري ما ليس فيه، ووضعت كل شيء منها موضعه، فأما الحوادث الصغار التي لا يحتمل منها كل شيء ترجمة فإنني أفردت لجميعها ترجمة واحدة في آخر كل سنة.
وقد جاء هذا الكتاب في 9 مجلدات جاء الأول بعنوان بدء الخلق الثاني: السيرة 20 هجرية، الثالث 21- 69 هجرية، الرابع: 70- 144 هجرية، الخامس 145- 260 هجرية، السادس: 261- 350 هجرية، السابع: 351- 422 هجرية، الثامن: 423- 535 هجرية، التاسع: 536- 628 هجرية.
