لقد أصبحت الترجمة في العصر الحاضر علماً وفناً ضرورياً لتطوير الفكر فعن طريقها يمكن نقل أحدث ما توصل إليه العلم والفن والأدب في أنحاء العالم إلى أبناء أمتنا وكذلك نقل تراثنا العربي إلى اللغات الأجنبية الحية.
ولما كانت الأمة العربية من الدول الناشئة التي تسعى لتطوير نفسها عن طريق العلم أصبح لزاماً على مفكريها أن يطلعوا على ما يجري في البلاد الأخرى في مختلف الميادين والمجالات.
لذلك فقد نصت مناهج التعليم في مختلف البلدان العربية على وجوب تدريس مادة الترجمة من العربية وإليها في مرحلة الدراسة الثانوية لجعل الطلاب يلمون بهذا الفن لما له من فائدة في حياتهم العملية.
وعندما فكرنا في وضع هذا الكتاب كان رائدنا إعطاء الطلاب نماذج متعددة من أنواع الترجمة التي يصادفونها في حياتهم العملية، كما حاولنا أيضاً أن نضمن هذا الكتاب نماذج من أوراق الفحوص العامة في مادة الترجمة إلى اللغة العربية لشهادة الـ G.C.E لما في ذلك من فائدة بالنسبة لتلك الفئة من الطلاب الذين يتقدمون إلى هذه الفحوص سنوياً.
وقد قمنا بترجمة عدة نماذج من العربية إلى الإنكليزية وبالعكس لإعطاء الطلاب فكرة عما يجب أن تكون عليه الترجمة الصحيحة. كما وإننا ذيلنا كل قطعة بشروحات لبعض الكلمات الصعبة في اللغة نفسها تاركين للطالب إيجاد الكلمة المناسبة، وحيث كانت الاصطلاحات فنية والتعابير صعبة أوردنا ترجمتها.
