يمكن اعتبار الباب السادس من أبواب كتاب العمري الضخم "مسالك الأبصار"، وهو الباب الذي خصصه للدولة المملوكية، أهم أجزاء الكتاب على الإطلاق. ولكي يكون واضحاً ما نعنيه بأهمية هذا الباب بالتحديد، نشير إلى أنه كان المصدر الرئيسي لكل أولئك الذين كتبوا من بعده عن تلك الحقبة الذهبية في تاريخ دولة المماليك بمصر والشام. إن الصورة التي يعرضها كل من القلقشندي (821هـ-1417م)، والمقريزي (845هـ/1442م)، والسيوطي (911هـ/1505م) للدولة في النصف الأول من القرن الثامن الهجري مأخوذة عن الباب السادس من أبواب كتاب العمري الذي يتعرض له هنا بالدراسة: فيما يتصل بمؤسسات الدولة، وترتيب الجيش، والتقسيمات الإدارية، والنقود.
وعندما نضع هذا كله في الاعتبار، نستطيع القول إنه لولا مؤلف العمري هذا لبقيت حقبة بكاملها من التطورات الإدارية وبنية الدولة بمصر والشام خاصة غامضة في سياقها العام وكثير من تفاصيلها، ثم إن بعض وجوه التطور التي أشار إليها العمري، ما كانت لتعالج بعده لولا تناوله لها بالذكر، كما أن دراستها لم تكن لتتخذ المنحى الذي اتخذته. وقد وجد القلقشندي والمقريزي الطريق ممهداً أمامهما، ولم يكن عليهما إلا أن يتابعاه، ويتوسعا في ذلك.
أما العمري فيبدو أنه هو الذي اختط هذا السبيل مستعيناً في ذلك ببعض النماذج الثقافية الموروثة مضيفاً على المسألة كلها طابعه الشخصي، وأسلوبه الذي عرف به باعتباره أحد كتاب الديوان بل كاتب السر بالمملكة كلها. فمن ضمن هذا الطابع الخاص يأتي اعتماده الرواية الشفوية مصدراً من مصادر التعرف على التطورات السياسية والتاريخية. ثم إنه من ضمن هذه الخصوصية تلك الخطة التي اعتمدها في بناء كتابه الضخم، والتي رآها الأنسب لعرض وقائع وتنظيمات الدولة والمجتمع المعاصرين.
أما التقليد الموروث الذي جدد فيه وحوره لكي يتوافق وما يريد عرضه، فهو تقليد كتب "المسالك والممالك" الذي بلغ ذروة ازدهاره في القرنين الرابع والخامس الهجريين/العاشر والحادي عشر الميلاديين.
