البحث عن التزكية وهن تهذيب النفس كان شغل العلماء طوال التأريخ من علماء الإمامية وغيرهم وخاصة في مسألة "حديث النفس" فجمعوا الأحاديث الصادرة عن هداة الخلف وأئمتهم، ومنهم المحقق والناقد العلامة "محمد باقر علم الهدى" حيث جمع لنا من أحاديث النفس الشيء الكثير وما يتعلق به من أسباب وآثار وتوابع ومقدمات ومؤخرات، فكان تجميع ما ورد عن أئمة الحق رضي الله عنهم، وما ذكره الله تعالى في كتابه الشغل الشاغل له والهدف منه "تزكية العباد في الظاهر والباطن وتطهيرهم من دنس الشرك بالله العظيم".
توزع الكتاب على تسعة عشر فصلاً تناولت جميع وجوه حديث النفس، في الذكر الحكيم وما ينبغي وما لا ينبغي للنفس الحديث به وحكم الشرع. إضافة إلى إخبارات أولياء الله بحديث النفس وإخبارهم بالمضمرات وكذلك حديث النفس كما ورد عند الأنبياء والأئمة عليهم السلام، مع نصوص من أذكار قلبية يتوجه بها المسلم إلى خالقه طاعة له وردت في روايات أهل البيت.
