وكان من الضروري أن تبدأ الدراسة بعرض لبعض المسائل النقدية التي اختص بها النثر بصفة عامة، وبخاصة في مجال الحديث عن الفرق بينه وبين الشعر وقد اتخذ هذا العرض أحياناً شكل التلميحات السريعة المتعجلة التي تكتفي بالإشارة وتحديد الأطر الخارجية، ومع ذلك فقد حاولت هذه الدراسة أن تقدم الكثير من هذه المسائل أو الإشكالات، من مثل الحديث عن أشهر الفنون النثرية كما رآها القدماء والمحدثون.
