واجه الفكر العربي في عصرالنهضة تحديات المشروع الغربي الحديث. فبدت المشكلات تواجه الشرقيين بوصفهم شعوباً مغلوبة، مستلبة، مستعمرة، خاضعة للهيمنة السياسية والإقتصادية والثقافية والإجتماعية التي يفرضها الغرب عليها. فالغرب الذي أحرز ذلك التقدم العظيم في ميادين فكرية مختلفة، جعل الشرق يقف منه موقف العاجز المدهوش أمام همل هذه التحديات. وجعل مستقبل الشرقيين خاضعاً للقلق والتوتر والبحث عن حلول للنهوض من واقع الركود والتخلف السائدين في الشرق. ولقد أحدث عصر النهضة دوياً في تاريخ الفكر العربي، لما لهذه المرحلة من أهمية... فتناول مفكرو ذلك العصر قضايا كانت شغلهم الشاغل مثل مشكلة العلاقة بالغرب، ومسألة التراث والحداثة، ومسألة الحرية والتقدم، وكثرت الآراء، وتشعبت الأفكار، وتعددت المواقف بين مؤيدين ومعارضين وموفقين...
إن هذه القضايا التي تناولها مفكرو ذلك العصر تمسك بالمفاصل الأساسية للحياة الثقافية في الشرق. لذلك بقيت مثار جدل وتساؤل عن مدى النجاح في إقامة علاقة متكافئة مع الغرب من الناحية الواقعية، ومدى التمسك بالتراث ومن ضمنه الدين. وهل الأخذ بالحداثة سبيل للخروج بنا إلى دنيا التقدم والمدنية والحضارة؟ وهل يمكن للعربي أن يحقق الحرية والتقدم بوجود الحكم التركي أو بالإستقلال عنه أو بإصلاح السلطة التركية الحاكمة؟..
ولعل هذه القضايا بقيت شغل الفكر العربي الشاغل حتى يومنا هذا، بسبب امتداد مرحلة التخلف والإنحطاط والترهل في الشرق أمام التطور غير المتوازي الذي أحدثه الغرب الصناعي التكنولوجي، إذ كان للنصوص الأدبية التي تناولت هذه القضايا في عصر النهضة قيمة فنية تستحق اكتشافها، واكتشاف أبعادها المضمونية، ولعل هذا ما دفعني إلى إلقاء الضوء على هذه الدراسة.
