أفاق يوسف من غيبوبته بعد زمن لم يحصه ؛ ليجد نفسه مكوما في حجرة ضيقة مظلمة باردة.. لقد اعتبروه متمردا ..أردوا له الموت البطيء في غيابة سجن موحش !
استسلم يوسف لهذه النهاية ..مصرع صديقه حمزة أمام عينيه بتلك الطريقة الوحشية أفقده جزءاً من شعوره..!
بخشخشة رتيبة يفتح مجهول نافذة صغيرة , تقع أعلى باب الزنزانة .. يصفع عيني يوسف بلمعان ضوء يحمله في يده .. هو يجيء ويذهب حاملا إليه الماء والطعام , دون أن يميط اللثام عن وجهه أو ينبس بحرف..هجس يوسف متسائلا بعدما ركبه الهم , وأيقن بخلوده في هذه الحفرة التي تذكره بالقبر :
ترى ما يكون هذا الكائن الذي لا أسمع منه سوى لهاث أنفاسه ووقع أقدامه.هل هو أنس أم جان .هل هو أصم .أخرس . ما هذه الحفرة القبيحة التي تبدو كقطعة من جهنم . هل أنا في القبر ..في عالم البرزخ .. هل هذا جزء من عذابات الآخرة ؟! كان الظلام يطوق يوسف من خارجه ؛ أما أعماقه فقد بدأت تضيء فيها بازغة نور, سطعت شيئا فشيئا من مشكاة ذاته الطيبة المختبئة تحت ركام ذنوبه . يكاد يراها تنبعث روحا زكية من تحت الرماد ..!!
