"تذكرة داود" كتاب ضخم، ضمنه مؤلفه وهو داود الأنطاكي وصفاً لأهم الأعشاب والعطارات المتداولة في التجارة والشائعة الاستعمال، وشرحاً موجزاً لأهم خواصها الطبيعية والكيميائية مع الإشارة غلى مواطنها وكيفية استخلاصها، بالإضافة إلى تأثيرها الوظيفي (الفسيولوجي) ومزاياها الطبيعية.
وبشكل عام قسم المؤلف كتابه إلى ثلاثة أجزاء، شرح في الأول منها تفصيلاً لعدد كبير يزيد على الثلاثة آلاف نبات وعشب مرتب حسب الحروف الهجائية، وخصص باقي الأجزاء للوصفات الطبية ومعالجة الأمراض المختلفة. وما من شك أن جزءاً كبيراً مما كتب "داود الإنطالي" منقول عن كتب علماء اليونان وعلى الأخص كتاب "العقاقير البسيطة" للعالم اليوناني جالينوس، وكتاب كناشة في الطب للعالم أهرف القس ، بل يغلب على الظن أن داود لم يترجم هذه الكتب بنفسه، بل عمد إلى نقلها مع الزيادة والتعديل من تقدمه من علماء العرب، مثل كتابي "الحاوي في الطب"، والأقر باذين" لأبي بكر محمد بن زكريا الرازي... هذا ولم يتوقف "داود الأنطاكي" عند النقل بل قام أيضاً بصنع العديد من الوصفات وجربها في شفاء بعض الأمراض وأتت بنتائج باهرة فضمها إلى تذكرته القيمة...
ولأهمية هذه التذكرة اعتنى الدكتور "عبد المعطي قلعجي" بتحقيق هذه الطبعة التي بين أيدينا وبضبط نصها، ومن ثم بالتعليق عليها بما رآه مفيد ونافعاً، وذلك متى تسهل قرأتها، كما واعتنى باتباع التذكرة بفهرسين، الأول أبجدي عن أسماء النباتات والأعشاب الواردة بالكتاب، والثاني فهرس أبجدى عن الأمراض والعلاجات الواردة بالكتاب، متى يتحقق منه النفع والفائدة.
