يتناول هذا الكتاب في الفصل الأول الأسباب التي أوجدت الدراسات النحوية هي نفسها التي وجهت عنايتها الى علاج ظاهرة اللحن فقد اهتم العلماء الأوائل بدراسة الفصحى تحدوهم الغيرة على حفظ القرآن بوضع ضوابط على آخر الكلمات ليتعود على نطقها الذين فسدت ألسنتهم من عرب وموال على أساس هذه العلامات وما يتصل بها من حيث البناء والإعراب وبدأوا بعد ذلك في إيضاح المعاني التي تشير لها الأجزاء اللغوية كالتذكر والتأنيث والتعريف والتنكير والإفراد والتثنية والجمع ثم يبين العوامل التي وقفت في وجه التطور النحوي ثم يتجه نحو الكلمة فيبين معناها ودلالتها وموضع الكلمة في الجملة من حيث التقدم والتأخير والمعني العميد للكلمة الذي هو أساس في الاقتران الذهني بين الألفاظ ثم يبحث الجملة ودلالتها الذاتية والموضوعية والحديث والمكانية والزمانية فالجملة تكون اسمية وتكون فعلية وفي الفصل الثاني يشير الى الجملة من حيث الإعراب كالجملة الاسمية والظرفية والفعلية الزمنية والتي لا يقصد بها الزمن فالدلالات الزمنية في الصيغ الصرفية التي هي صيغ الأفعال مفردة خارج السياق وفي القرائن اللفظية السياقية وفي القرائن المعنوية والتاريخية ويشير في الفصل الثالث الى الجملة الماضية فيذكر أنواعها فجملة الماضي البسيط والماضي البعيد المتقطع والماضي المتجدد والماضي المنتهي بالحاضر وجملة الماضي المتصل بالحاضر والماضي المستمر والماضي المقارب والماضي الشروعي والماضي البعيد .
