أصل هذا الكتاب بحث علمي متميز نال به صاحبه درجة الماجستير في العلوم السياسية من جامعة النجاح بفلسطين المحتلة. وهو يتناول دور الولايات المتحدة في إحداث تحول ديموقراطي في فلسطين، مدفوعة بتطلعاتها لحماية أمن "إسرائيل"، وبحاجتها لإنجاز اتفاق فلسطيني – إسرائيلي، يخدم مصالحها وأهدافها الاستراتيجية في الشرق الأوسط؛ حيث كانت خدمة هذه المصالح، وطبيعة العلاقة الإسرائيلية - الأمريكية، وقضية التسوية، محددات رئيسة لقبولها لهذا التحول.
لقد جاء لجوء الولايات المتحدة إلى ما يُسمى "إصلاح" السلطة، وتغيير القيادة السياسية الفلسطينية، نتيجة لعجزها عن تقديم مبادرات جدية لحل الصراع، وعدم رغبتها أو عدم قدرتها على الضغط على "إسرائيل" لإبداء مرونة أكبر في القضايا الحساسة في عملية التسوية. كما جاء محاولةً لتغيير المنطلقات والأسس الفلسطينية لعملية التفاوض، وتغيير تصوراتهم التي تعتمد على قرارات الشرعية الدولية، إلى تصورات جديدة تضع الأمر الواقع أساساً لها، ولا سيّما فيما يخص قضايا اللاجئين والقدس والمستوطنات.
