فقد كان يتكبد الأسفار ويجوب البحار، بحثاً عن الحقيقة التي هي ضالته المنشودة، فهو من المؤلفين الذين يمتازون بسلامة الذوق في انتقاء ما يستحق الرواية، وكتابه هذا يضم كماً هائلاً من الحقائق التاريخية الدقيقة التي يتعذر العثور عليها في كتاب آخر، خصوصاً فيما يخصّ بوصف مدن العراق القديمة التي محيت آثارها، ولم يبق من إطلالها إلا القليل القليل، وساعد المؤلف على الإتيان بهذه الفوائد في زمن الكثيرين ممن حضروا تلك المدن وهي بالغة مبلغها في الحضارة، أما تاريخ الأقاليم والأقطار التي فتحها العرب فقد أتى على ذكره بطريق الإيجاز، وبالتالي يرى المطلع على هذا الكتاب أنه مرآة تنطبع فيها صور العصور الأولى للدول الإسلامية من الاشياء الهامة التي أرخى لها المؤلف في كتابه هذا أمر الخاتم، وأمر النقود، وأمر الخط، والتي جاءت بهدف إرساء قواعد التنظيم الداخلي في البلدان الإسلامية.
