عبد الله بن سالم البصري، العلم محور هذا الكتاب، هو عالم عارف أطلعه الله على أسرار المعارف، قارئ صحيح البخاري في الكعبة الشريفة، أمام الحديث وخادمه المقدم في هذا العصر، منار الشريعة ومحقق الحقيقة ومفصل إجمالها. جامع العلوم والمستخرج في بحورها درر المنطوق والمفهوم، المقتني نفائس جواهرها، المجتني أزاهر بواطنها وظواهرها. هيأه الله في ظروف عصيبة لخدمة السنة النبوية والحديث الشريف في أشرف مكان، وأطهر بقعة. مكة المكرمة وقد طوى عمراً مديداً ينيف على الثمانين في خدمة هذه الغاية، وتحقيق هذا الهدف. بدأ في أول أمره طالباً للسنة محصلاً لها، مجدّاً مجتهداً في دراستها، ملازماً لأئمتها السنين الطوال، ولم يزل في جد واجتهاد حتى غدا إمامها الأوحد في البلد الحرام، فما يذكر العلاّمة البصري إلا مع كتب السنة، وما تذكر كتب السنة في ذل كالعصر إلا وتشير البنان إليه ويكون التعويل عليه، وتثنى الركب لطلبها بين يديه؛ فهو الذي يشرح دواوينها ويصحح كتبها، ويميز ألفاظها، ويعرف تاريخ رواتها، ويكشف مناهجها... وكأن البصري خلق لهذه المهمة الشريفة ليقوم بها على خير قيام وعلى أحسن وجه بدون كلل أو ملل، وبدون تهاون أو تثاقل.
وهذا الكتاب الذي ضمّ ترجمة لحياته، جاءت خطوات البحث فيه على الشكل التالي: تمهيد وفيه إطلالة على الحياة السياسية والعلمية والاجتماعية في مكة المكرمة خلال القرن الحادي عشر الهجري. ثم تبع ذلك ثلاثة فصول دار الأول منها حول مرحلة نشأة وتكوين الإمام البصري من حيث نسبه ولادته ونشأته وطلبه للعلم وعوامل نجاحه وتفوقه وشيوخه وأساتذته ثم عقيدته ومذهبه وجاء الفصل الثاني متحدثاً عن مرحلة العطاء والإنجاز في حياة الإمام البصري من حيث تلاميذه وأصحابه ومصنفاته وآثاره ووفاته وثناء العلماء عليه ثم نماذج من خطّه، ونصوص إجازاته. وأما الفصل الثالث فقد تمّ تخصيصه للشيخ سالم بن عبد الله البصري ودوره بعد رحيل والده الإمام البصري مبرزاً في ذلك مكانته العلمية.
