يضم هذا الكتاب وقائع ندوتين علميتين عقدتهما الجمعية العربية لعلم الاجتماع، وشارك فيهما ستة وخمسون باحثاً عربياً واجنبياً. وهو يحتوي على ثلاث وخمسين دراسة تبحث في مسألة الاخرية، ونظرة العرب الى الأخر، ونظرة الأخر للعرب وللمهاجر العربي، والاختلاف والتراتب، واخر الأدب والفن. ويسعى الى إيجاد تقاطعات بين ابرز توجهات المساهمات المختلفة فيه، ويحرص على استخراج المفاهيم الأساسية التي تحكم جدلية العلاقة بين الذات والأخر. من هو الأخر؟ اهو الخصم "الجواني" ضحية الرفض المضمر؟ أم العدو الأبعد – المرفوض علناً؟ وإذا كان بين الأنا والآخر مسافات متنوعة، فهل صحيح أنها مسافات لا تخلو ابداً من وسائط مختلفة بين الطرفين؟ وما هي حدود وجدوى انفتاح على اخر مغلق؟ أسئلة كثيرة يثيرها هذا الكتاب مستنتجاً أن ظاهرة الرفض القائم على الجهل بالأخر هي ظاهرة منتشرة بين الثقافات، وهي تقود غالباً الى مواقف سلبية عديدة منه قائمة على التنميط المسبق بدءاً باستبعاده واقصائة، ومروراً بالتخندق الثقافي والتباعد في الثقافة والزمن، وانتهاء بتجميد صورة الآخر.
