لا شك أن الدوافع تكون غالباً كبيرة ومهمة لإختيار اليوم الوطني لبلد من البلدان، وحين اختارت دولة قطر يوم 12/18 من كل عام ليكون يوماً وطنياً لها، فهي بذلك تكرم ابناً باراً من أبنائها هو الشيخ "قاسم بن محمد آل ثاني" الذي اعتمدت تاريخ تسلمه الحكم يوماً وطنياً لهذه البلاد.
إن الشيخ "قاسم" الذي يعد المؤسس الحقيقي لدولة قطر الحديثة، رغم أنه الحاكم الثاني في تسلسل الحكام من آل ثاني، غير أنه ترك بصمات واضحة، فقد توحدت القبائل في عصره، ورضيت به حاكماً لها، وشهدت البلاد في عصره أمناً وإستقراراً غير معهود.
ومما تجدر الإشارة إليه أن الشيخ "قاسم بن محمد آل ثاني" لم يكن حاكماً تقليدياً، فقد كان فقهياً، شاعراً، فارساً وكريماً، وقد اهتم بالعلم، والعلماء، ورعى الثقافة في عصره، بمستوى ذلك العصر، فاهتم بالكتب وطبعها ووزعها على الباحثين، والطلبة، وكان يتقصى أخبار الكتب ويسعى إلى جلبها ويوصي بطباعتها، وهو ما دفع الكاتب إلى كتابة هذا المؤلف إعترافاً بجميل هذا الرجل، ومساهمة منه في اليوم الوطني لدولة قطر.
وقد تضمن الكتاب عدداً من الأقسام، وهي: ملامح من شخصية الشيخ "قاسم بن محمد آل ثاني"، بروز دوره مع شخصيات أخرى، دور الشيخ "قاسم" في قطر، بدايات التعليم في قطر، الشيخ "قاسم" مؤرخاً.
