خواطر بسكال التي جاء بها للدفاع عن الدين هي عبارة عن نفتات علوية خطها لنفسه ليجعل منها نواة لأضخم مصنف من نوعه كان بالإمكان أن يكون فأدركه مطفئ الآمال ومحطّم المطامح، وإذ بتلك الفكر العجيبة نثار من الأوراق المبعثرة هنا وهناك، يتعهدها القوم جمعاً وتبويباً وتنسيقاً، ثم يمثلونها بالطبع، فيقفون حيارى أمام غوامضها، مذهولين أمام روائعها، لا يجرؤون على تبديل وتحوير، مخافة أن يسيئوا إلى تلك العبقرية المخيفة التي انبثقت منها تلك الالتماعات السماوية الخواطف، وما كانت إلا معالم خيرة تشرف على عوالم لا نهائية من الفكر المنطلق في رحائب المعرفة، حتى الحدود التي رسمها الخالق عز وجل للعقل، موقفه عندها، وأذلّه وخزاه ودعا الإنسان إلى الإيمان به سبحانه، فلا يحاول أن يجاوز ماوسع له من المدارك والأفهام. وما أصرت ما قال علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه من هذا القبيل "كيف يصف الهه من يعجز عن صفة مخلوق مثله".
