"ما هي أهم قضية تواجه البشرية في طريقها نحو المستقبل، وماذا يمكن فعله لحلها؟ حول هذا السؤال تألفت فرقة صغيرة من مسلمين ومسيحيين شديدي الاهتمام بالموضوع، أتوا من مختلف أجزاء العالم، واجتمعوا من 19 إلى 23 تشرين الأول سنة 2000 في فيننا. وأبدوا كل على حدة رأيهم الشخصي في وضع العالم الحالي. وقد أفسحت المناقشات التي تبعت كل عرض المجال للعودة إلى ما جاء فيه والتبصر المشترك فيه وإدخال النتائج في النظرات الفردية إلى القضايا المختلفة.
يحدث أحياناً في مجال تبادل الآراء الواحد يسمع رأي الآخر ويكتفي باعتباره مجرد رأي الآخر، ويبقى هو على موقفه الخاص من القضايا المطروحة غير ملتفت إلى ذلك الرأي، بل معتبراً أنه قد وجد سبباً جديداُ للإصرار على موقفه الخاص. أما في الندوة ما يمكن تسميته بأفق مشترك يطل على القضايا البشرية، وبنوع أوضح: بوعي للانتساب المتبادل المشترك أمام الله وفي المسؤولية تجاه العالم، وعي يريد أن يفضي إلى نشاط مشترك. وقد نتج من ذلك في ختام الندوة قبل كل شيء القرار بتحويل الندوة إلى فريق عمل يتألف من مسلمين ومسيحيين، ويتصدى لقطاعات معينة من القضايا ويعمل، في إطار مخطط عمل يقرر معاً، على معالجتها. وبعد تأليف لجنة إدارية مؤلفة من خمسة أعضاء، اكتسبت مبادرة الحوار المسيحية الإسلامية هذه شكل مؤسسة يفسح لها المجال، في ترابطها داخلياً وفي نشاطها خارجياً، لأن تنمو وتزداد نمواً وتكلّف نفسها في إطار أهدافها وإمكانياتها باستنباط نتائج ملموسة.
