الإيمان بالله، في ما ينطوي عليه من أمور مشتركة ومتميزة، يشمل كل نواحي تاريخ الجماعات الدينية الإسلامية والمسيحية وعقائدها. وله أيضاً تأثير كبير في ميادين كثيرة من تاريخ البشرية الثقافي والفكري. ما نود أن نرسمه هنا -على خلفية تاريخ اللقاء بين المسيحية والإسلام- إنما هو صورة الله نفسها، كما تظهر في أقوال هاتين الجماعتين الدينيتين الكبيرتين وتاريخهما. وبهذا ينحصر موضوع الكتاب، ويتركز بقدر ما يتسم هذا الموضوع بطابع مميز ومحوري.
الميزة الثانية لمساهمات هذا الكتاب تكمن في أن خصوصية الإيمان بالله يعبر عنها كل واحد من داخل تقليده الإيماني. وهذا يؤكد أولاً التمايز في الإيمان المشترك بالله. فالحديث لا ينطلق من وجهة نظر "تتخطى الجماعات الدينية"، ولا من موقف غير ملتزم، حيادي، يعالج اختلاف الإيمان بالله في المسيحية والإسلام معالجة موضوعية، بل ينطلق الحديث بالحري من الميدان الخاص لكل من التقليدين الدينيين، الذي فيه تكمن ميزة كل من الديانتين، وينطلق بالتالي من العلاقة الشخصية التي تربط المسيحيين والمسلمين بالإله الذي يؤمنون به.
