وقد أراد أنطون فيقانو وميشال مراد من هذا القاموس أن يكون جامعاً لجميع الأقوال المأثورة والأمثال المتداولة العربية والمعربة، شعراً ونثراً، ولم يقتصرا في ذلك على أقوال العرب وإنما وسعا عملهما كي يتسع لكل ما جاءت به قرائح أبناء الأمم الأخرى على اختلاف الأزمنة والأمكنة. وقد رتبا هذه الأقوال على حروف الأبجدية ثم ذيلا الكتاب بحواش وفهارس للإعلام وأرقام الصفحات التي وردت فيها لتسهيل عملية البحث والتفتيش.
