يتناول كتاب جيو-سياسية آسيا الوسطى، دراسة مفصلة حول التكوين الجغرافي والسياسي والتاريخي والاقتصادي والاجتماعي والأمني، لمنطقة كانت حتى سنوات قريبة، جزء من الإمبراطورية السوفياتية وخارج إطار المنافسة الدولية. وبرزت أهمية هذه المنطقة بعد اكتشاف غناها بالموارد النفطية والغازية، مما جعلها حقاً منطقة صراعات بين القوى العالمية، ودخلت في الحسابات الاستراتيجية للقوى الكبرى والإقليمية، واستطاع المؤلفان إعطاء صورة شاملة ودقيقة لآسيا الوسطى، تعطي المهتمين بالشأن الآسيوي مادة علمية غنية بالإحصاءات الحديثة التي تعود للأعوام 1998-1999-2000، وتبرز أهمية هذا الكتاب بوضعه تصورات مستقبلية للسنوات المقبلة، لخطط العمل المقترحة في بعض القضايا الجوهرية وخاصة في مجال استثمار الثروة النفطية.
وقد وضع دار PUF هذا الكتاب في شهر آذار من عام 2001 أي قبل الحرب الأميركية على أفغانستان، فكان لا بد من مقدمة تمهيدية للربط بين وسط آسيا والحرب الجديدة. ولإلقاء الضوء على خلفيات وأبعاد هذه الحرب المستجدة. وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن الدكتور محمد رضا جليلي هو أستاذ في المعهد الدولي للدراسات الاستراتيجية في سويسرا، والأستاذ تيري كيليز، الذي يعمل على تحضير رسالة دكتوراه حول وسط آسيا هما مؤلفا هذا الكتاب.
"جيو - سياسية آسيا الوسطى" هو كتاب صدر في فرنسا للمؤلفين محمد رضا جليلي وتيري كيلينر (وهما أستاذان في معهد الدراسات الاستراتيجية في سويسرا)، وقد ترجم هذا الكتاب الدكتور علي مقلد بعد الحصول على إذن الترجمة من البروفسور جليلي. تزامن إصدار هذا الكتاب مع الحرب الأميركية على أفغانستان فوضع الناشر مقدمة من 36 صفحة تربط بين هذه الحرب وآسيا الوسطى. كان للأصل الفرنسي لهذا الكتاب وقع مؤثر في الشارع الغربي وتناولته العديد من الصحف بالدرس والتحليل ومنها جريدة Le monde diplomatique. أما الكتاب العربي فكان موضع اهتمام جريدة الرياض السعودية وكلية القيادة والأركان في الجيش اللبناني.
