يروي لنا كتاب "مراقبة الريح" قصة مشاركة شخصية في إحدى أنجح العمليات السلمية التي جرت في السنين القريبة، وهي العملية التي انتقلت فيها جنوب أفريقيا من حالة الفصل العنصري الى حالة الديمقراطية. فقد أسست اتفاقية السلام الوطنية التي وقعتها جميع الأطراف الرئيسية في جنوب أفريقيا لإقامة شبكة من اللجان الاقليمية والمحلية العاملة في صنع السلام، من أجل المساهمة في دحض العنف وإنهاض التعاون العرقي والسياسي، خلال المسيرة التي خطتها البلاد نحو أول انتخابات ديمقراطية رئيسة تجري عام 1994 وقد تمكنت الاتفاقية الاتفاقية من ربط النشاطات على المستوى الشعبي بأعلى مستويات صنع القرار، بحيث أدت في النهاية الى صياغة اتفاقية سلام حقيقية.
كانت سوزان كولن ماركس عضوة في لجنة السلام الاقليمية لغرب البلاد، وقد قدم كتابها تفاصيل للجهود التي بذلتها هي وزملاؤها لتشجيع الحوار السياسي المفتوح، والمشاركة في تهدئة للتجمعات التي كانت تشكل مكامن وبؤراً للعنف، وفي تحسين علاقات الشرطة بالمجتمع، وإيقاف تصاعد العنف بشكل عام باتجاه المستويات غير الحكومية.
"مراقبة الريح" هي رواية شخصية وعميقة، تنقل كما نقلت روايات قليلة من قبلها انطباعاً قوياً وحياً عن معنى أن تكون عاملاً من أجل السلام على الخطوط الامامية لصراع معاصر. كما تبين الصعوبات والمخاطر التي كانت تواكب تلك الجولات التي يقوم بها ناشطو السلام في المعسكرات المقامة على أراضي الغير Squatter Camps، وداخل قاعات البلدية المحاصرة، وفي البلدات المتفجرة بالغضب، من أجل منع المواجهات العنيفة بين فئات غاضبة ويائسة، أو من أجل التوسط بينها. وتذكر الرواية أيضاً تلك الت كانت تبذل في الشوارع من أجل إجراء المفاوضات بين شرطة مكافحة الشغب وبين المتظاهرين الغاضبين، أو الوقوف حائلاً بينمها. كما تأخذنا الرواية أيضاً في جولة داخل غرف الاجتماعات وقاعات المجالس، حيث كان العاملون من أجل السلام يحاولون التوصل الى حلول وسط ترضي ولو مؤقتاً الأطراف المتنازعة. عانت سوزان كولن ماركس الكثير من أجل تقديم وجهة نظر متوازنة حول اتفاقية السلام الوطني، ومن أجل الكشف عن بعض نواقصها وشرح أسباب الفشل الذي لحق بها في بعض النواحي، مثل عدم تحقيق ما كان مطلوباً منها. ومع ذلك فقد كانت سوزان من أوائل الذين عبّروا عن تقديرهم لعملية السلام في جنوب أفريقيا.
