وفي القرن التاسع عشر، أصبحت القصة القصيرة فناً قائماً بذاته، وانتشرت بسرعة بفضل تطور الصحافة آنذاك، وشهدت بذلك شهرة لم تعرفها من قبل.
وقد شارك في كتابة القصة القصيرة عدد كبير من كبار أدباء القرن التاسع عشر مثل ميريمة ونوديه وبلزاك وستاندال وموباسان وغيرهم كثير.
وتُحد القصة القصيرة بكونها حكاية سريعة تقوم على تداول الحدث وتقتصر الحبكة فيها على عدد قليل من الشخصيات ومشاهد الوصف، وهي تُكتب بأسلوب واقعي وموضوعي.
