هذا كتاب بليغ في موضوعه، ممتاز في بابه، وما رؤي في هذا الموضوع كتاب أنبل منه ولا أعذب مشرعاً ولا أطيب منزعاً، ليس لأحد من المتقدِّمين ولا المتأخرين مثله على كثرة ما صنّفوا في ذلك على حدَّة الفكرة ونفاذ الخاطر وما لمؤلّفه من الذَّكاء والنباهة؛ تشرق آراؤه القيّمة في تضاعيفه، وتومض بروق علومه في صفحاته، تدلُّ على تضلّعه وبراعته وحسن إيراده وإصداره، يبحث فيه بحثاً تحليليّاً عن شخصيّة الإمام الغائب ووجوده وغيبته وما يؤول إليه أمره.
كلُّ تلك الأخبار الّتي وردت عن المعصومين، ويناضل ويبارز فيه مخالفيه ومنكريه ويجيب عن شبهاتهم ويردُّ على تشكيكاتهم ببراهين ساطعة وحجج بالغة داحضة، ويطل البحث في ردِّ المنكرين ويورد فيه أبحاثاً ضافية في إثبات إمامته وغيبته، ويوطّد دعواه المدعومة بالبرهان بآي من القرآن وصحاح من الأخبار عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وعترته الأخيار ما لا يزيد عليه.
وجمع فيه ما روي في هذا الموضوع واشتهر بين الناس صحيحاً كان أو ضعيفاً، حسناً كان أو زيّفاً، لكن لم يحتجّ إلاّ بالصحاح أو بالمجمع عليه أو بالمتواتر منها.
وقال في غير موضع منه بعد نقل أخبار: "ليس هذا الحديث وما شاكله من أخبار المعمرّين وغيرهم ممّا أعتمده في أمر الغيبة ووقوعها لأنَّ الغيبة إنّما صحّت لي بما صحَّ عن النبيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم من ذلك بالأخبار الّتي بمثلها صحِّ الإسلام وشرائعه وأحكامه".
