إن الحسيديّة هي الصوفية الشعبية التي ذهبت بعيدا في نقلها لصورة يهود شرق أوروبا في القرنين الثامن عشر والتاسع عشر.
ظهرت الحركة الحسيديّة في بولندا في القرن الثامن عشر. وبالرغم من الاضطهاد الفظيع الذي عانته على يد الربانيّة التقليدية، فإنها انتشرت بسرعة في أوساط يهود شرق أوروبا إلى أن شملت نصفهم تقريبا.
تهتم المقالات التي يضمها هذا الكتاب بحياة الحسيديّة، التي قام مارتن بوبر بإظهارها وشرحها. والحسيديّة كما يصورها بوبر هي صوفيّة تقدّس المجتمع والحياة اليومية بدلا من الانسحاب خارجها، "إذ أنّ الإنسان لا يستطيع أن يحبّ الرب دون أن يحبّ العالم".
يعتبر مارتن بوبر شارحا "لفلسفة الحوار" – وهي وجهة نظر مهمة وجديدة للوجود الإنساني. تلك الفلسفة التي لاقت تأييداً كبيرا من قبل الفلسفتين المعاصرتين اليهودية والمسيحية على حدّ سواء. كذلك فهي لا تقل قوّة عن علم النفس والتربية والأخلاق والفكر الاجتماعي.
ومن خلال فلسفته "أنا وأنت"، وضمن علاقة متبادلة مثمرة مع الحسيديّة، ذاع صيت بوبر لإبداعه حولها، فاكتشافه لها كان بمثابة حدثٍ بارز لليهودية الغربية، فكما يقول روبرت ولتش Weltsch فقد "وضع أطروحة يمكن تصديقها" كذلك "ليس هناك من تجديد محتمل لليهودية، لا يحمل في داخله عناصر حسيديّة". وخلال كتاباته الحسيديّة مارس بوب تأثيرا مهما في الحركة الحسيديّة؟ وقد بادرللقيام بهذا في عالم الثقافة اليهودية عدّة آلاف من اليهود مجرّدين من الخلفية اليهودية. لكن بوبر بعمله الفردي تقريباً قام بنقل الحسيديّة من وجهة نظر الإنسان الحديث من حركة غير معروفة جيّدا ولا تقدّر حق قدرها ومهملة من قبل الثقافة الغربية، إلى واحدة من أكثر الحركات شهرة في العالم.
ويعتبر مؤلف هذا الكتاب بوبر فيلسوفا وأديبا على المستوى الثقافي. أمّا على المستوى السياسي فهو من المتحمسين للحركة الصهيونية، ولكن بفارق واجد غير بسيط وهو أنه كان يؤمن بضرورة إقامة وطن روحي لليهود في فلسطين، لا يكون على حساب الفلسطينيين.
