كتاب "التكملة" من الكتب الأصول التي لقيت اهتماماً كبيراً من دارسي اللغة الأقدمين، وتبرز أهميته في كونه كتاباً خصصه مؤلفه "الحسن بن أبان الفارسي النحوي" لبحث قواعد اللغة والصرف وأقيستها، التي بحثها علماء سابقون في هذا الباب، وهو بالأخص اقتفى أثر سيبويه في كتابه. وقد عني الدكتور كاظم بحر المرجان بدراسة وتحقيق الكتاب. وذلك عبر تقسيمه الكتاب على قسمين: الأول دراسته والثاني تحقيقه، وجزأ القسم الأول إلى تمهيد وفصلين، عرف باقتضاب في التمهيد بالمصنف إذ أشار إلى حياته وأساتذته وتلامذته وآثاره، ذاكراً عدداً غر قليل من مراجع ترجمته. عاقداً الفصل الأول لدراسة الكتاب وقسمه إلى أربعة أقسام بحيث في الأول منها سبب التأليف، وتاريخه.
وفي الثاني يعرض المصادر التكملة، وفي الثالث عرض موضوعات الكتاب وأبوابه ومن الرابع ذكر كتب الشروح وشروح الشواهد ومؤلفيها. وخصص الفصل الثاني لمنهج الكتاب، وقسمه إلى أربعة أقسام تحدث فيها عن طريقة عرض المادة والقياس وما ترتبط فيه من موضوعات مثل التعليل والاحتجاج... كما وتحدث فيه عن موقفه من المدارس النحوية المختلفة وشيوخها، منهياً كلامه بالحديث عن شخصية "أبى علي" اللغوية في الكتاب.
هذا وقد الحق الدراسة بخاتمة تحدث فيها عن أثر الكتاب فيما بعد من المصنفات، مركزاً على تتبع هذا الأثر في بعض مصنفات ابن جني، وفي المخصص، والأمالي الشجرية، أما القسم الثاني في الدراسة، فخصصه لتحقيق الكتاب وتجلى عمله بـ ضبط النصوص وتخريج الآيات القرآنية الكريمة والأحاديث النبوية الشريفة، وبترجمة مختصرة لأعلام النحاة واللغويين، الذي وردت أسماؤهم في الكتاب، وبفهارس للآيات القرآنية، وأخرى للشواهد والأمثال والأقوال، كتاب "التكملة" كتاب نفيس لا غنى لدارس اللغة العربية ومدرسها من الرجوع إليه بنفس القدر الذي لا غنى فيه المكتبة العربية بأن يًرفد إليها بين الآونة والأخرى.
