يمكن القول اجمالا ان نيتشه اعتقد ان الجنون هو الحالة الاعتيادسة والطبيعية التي اقترت بمصائر الرجال العباقرة والقديسين والانبياء، ولا يمكن النيل من مكانة الجنون كونه حالة مرضية مألوفة... وقد أرجع نيتشه نشأة هذا اللبس الى استنتاج خاطئ لظاهرة الانفعال إذ إن البشر عامة عندما لاحظوا ان الانفعال غالباً ما ينجم عنه وضوح في الذهن وايحاءات سعيدة، اعتقدوا انهم يمكن ان يصلوا عن طريقه الى أسعد الادراكات وارقى الافكار، و"هكذا وقر المجنون حكيماً ومانح معجزات"... فالجنون هو الذي هيأ الطريق للآراء الجديدة التي كسرت شوكة العادات والمعتقدات الخرافية المبجلة، ومن ثم، لن يبقى امام جميع اولئك الرجال المتفوقين، المدفوعين بدافع لا يقاوم الى التحرر من عبودية الاخلاق والاخلاقية وإعلان قوانين جديدة، حين لا يكونون مجانين فعلاً، الا ان يصيروا كذلك، او يتظاهروا بالجنون، وقد عبر أفلاطون، كما ذكر نيتشه، عن كل ذلك بوضوح عندما قال: "لقد كان الجنون وراء كل النعم التي تمتعت بها اليونان".
