ليس من السهل، في هذه الأيام، أن نتفهم كيف كان العالم الناطق باللغة الإنجليزية يتخيل لورنس والثورة العربية في منتصف ستينيات القرن الماضي، حين ظهر كتاب سليمان الموسى لأول مرة عن لورنس.
في ذلك الوقت، كان الأوروبيون يحملون في مخيلتهم صورة للعالم العربي ما تزال متأثرة بقوة بإتجاهات التفوق العرفي والثقافي، التي أضفت على العهد الفكتوري مظهراً خادعاً من المثل الأخلاقية، وفي بريطانيا تحديداً، نظر الناس حينئذ بإستياء "لرياح التغيير" التي كانت تعمل على تفكيك الإمبراطورية.
ولذا لم تجري عملية إعادة تقييم متوازنة للشعوب التي كانت خاضعة للسيطرة الإستعمارية، فوق هذا، كان هناك إستياء (مع أشياء أخرى) من أحداث الجزائر وحرب السويس، وخشية على سلامة إسرائيل، وقلق متزايد من النفوذ السوفياتي في العالم العربي، وعدم إرتياح لما يحمله المستقبل بشأن موارد النفط من الشرق الأوسط.
وفيما يتعلق بلورنس، فلا المعجبون به ولا النقاد له، فكروا في حجم إسهام العرب في الثورة العربية، بل إن فيلم (لورنس والعرب) الذي أنتج عام 1963، قد عزز، بدل أن يصحح، الصور [النمطية] العنصرية الخاطئة عن العرب؛ لقد كان تصوير الفيلم للعرب متماشياً مع التفكير السائد في بريطانيا في نهاية العهد الفكتوري.
لذا، فإن كتاب سليمان الموسى لورنس والعرب: وجهة نظر عربية قد ترك أثراً عميقاً ودائمياً على عملية البحث العلمي في لورنس، لقد بيّن لنا هذا الكتاب كيف بدت الأحداث من وجهة نظر عربية مختلفة عما عهدناه، كما أن الكتاب علّمنا أن نشك في المسلمات التي تفترض أن الأشياء حدثت - هكذا فقط، أو فعلاً حدثت - كما أراد لها لورنس أن تبدو كذلك.
