العلامة الشيخ عبد المجيد المغربي من أسرة علمية عريقة، بيت علم وقضاء وإفتاء، استمر فيهم منذ هاجر جدهم الأعلى مفتي الديار التونسية الشيخ محمد دارغوث (قلب العائلي الأصلي) إلى مدينة طرابلس الشام منذ أواخر القرن الحادي عشر للهجرة.
ولد في مدينة طرابلس الشام عام 1866 ميلادية وتوفي فيها يوم السبت 7 نيسان 1934، وهو من علماء طرابلس وبلاد الشام وكبار أعيانهم، قضى حياته في التأليف والتعليم والإفتاء، وخاص أيضاً غمار السياسة ناقداً ومصلحاً في عهد الخلافة العثمانية والانتداب الفرنسي، وتولى منصب "أمين الفتوى الشريفة" في مدينة طرابلس الشام ومركز الإفتاء في قائمقامية جبلة وحاكمية وقائمقامية صافيتا في صوريا.
كما وتبحر العلامة عبد المجيد المغربي في العلوم العصرية إلى جانب العلوم الدينية، كان مقصد العلماء في بلاد الشام، وصدر عنه عدد كبير من الفتاوى العلمية والقانونية في الشرع الإسلامي وفي قضايا ومسائل قانونية "للطوائف غير الإسلامية"، أدرك الصلة الوثيقة بين الدراسة الإسلامية التي تعمق في فهم حقيقتها وبين العلوم الطبيعية والمادية. وزخرت مؤلفاته ودراساته بالنقد والتحليل والتأصيل العلمي والمنطقي والمحاكمات لكثير من المعتقدات والمعاملات.
ويعد كتابه المنهل الفائض في علم ا لفرائص أو (علم الميراث) من أفضل ما كتب في هذا العلم الدقيق الصعب المتعلق بالميراث والتركات كما وصفه العلامة الأستاذ الإمام "محمد أبو زهرة" أستاذ علم الشريعة الإسلامية بجامعة فؤاد الأول بالقاهرة. وهو يدرس في عدد كبير من الجامعات في الوطن العربي. واعتمد هذا الكتاب كمرجع أساسي في تنظيم قضايا الميراث في موسوعة التشريع اللبناني.
ومن يطالع متن الكتاب يجد أن المؤلف وقد تفرد السيد بأسلوبه الخاص فجاء الكتاب بطريق السؤال والجواب عل الباحث القانوني يجد فيه ضالته والطالب الحقوقي غرضه بتوضيح الفرائض وتقسيمها مع حلول لمسائله وتطبيقات عملية لمستعصياته.
