"الشيخ المفيد" مصنف هذا الكتاب، هو أبو عبد الله محمد بن النعمان ابن جبير، المعروف بابن المعلم، كما واشتهر بالمفيد، ينتهي نسبه إلى يعرب بن قحطان كان من إجلاء مشايخ الشيعة ورئيسهم وأستاذهم، مفضلة أشهر من يوصف في الفقه والكلام والرواية، أوثق أهل زمانه وأعلمهم، انتهت إليه رياسة الطائفة الإمامية في وقته إليه, له مؤلفات وآثار بلغت المائتين في الفقه والحديث والكلام.
من أهم مؤلفاته: كتاب المقنعة والأمالي والاختصاص الذي نقلب صفحاته. وهو يحتوي فتوتا من الأحاديث وعيوناً من الأخبار ومحاسن من الآثار والحكايات في معان كثيرة. وقد اعتمد كبار علماء الإمامية واعتبره من أهم المصادر في موضوعه وأعاروه عناية فائقة كبرى نظراً لمكانة مؤلفه.
