"تشكّل الفلسفة في عصر الآباء مرحلةً متوسطةً وانتقاليةً بين الفلسفة الكلاسيكية اليونانية والرومانية والفلسفة الوسيطة؛ لأنها جمعت المعطيات الثقافية الكلاسيكية والمعطيات الثقافية المسيحية، التي شكلت بدورها ثقافة أوغسطين الذي يُعد من المفكرين المتميزين بالعبقرية آنذاك، فهو يعتبر من أهم رواد الفكر اللاهوتي، وصاحب نظريات فلسفية ودينية ما زالت إلى يومنا تُدرس وتُناقش في محافل اللاهوت والفكر الفلسفي، ويعدّ من أشهر آباء الكنيسة الذين كتبوا باللغة اللاتينية، سواء أكان على الصعيد الأدبي أم الفلسفي أم اللاهوتي، وقد سيطر وجوده على ساحة الفكر حتى القرن الثالث عشر تحت اسم ""الأوغسطينية""، ولم يفقد حضوره بل صار منافسًا لتيار ظهر على الساحة يتبنى النزعة الأرسطية على يد توما الأكويني، لكن تلك النزعة الأرسطية لم تحطّ من قدر أوغسطين أو تقلل من شأنه. فجاءت أهمية أوغسطين من أنه مازج بين مجموعة من الثقافات الكلاسيكية التي تمثلت بمجموعة من المدارس الفلسفية والدينية، تشكل الأصل في تأسيس الجانب الإنساني في فكره، فضلًا عن ثقافة أخرى تُعدّ رافدًا أساسيًا في تكوين خطاب أوغسطين، وهو الإيمان بما أوحي من السماء كنزعة لاهوتية ظهرت في المجتمعات الشرقية - الآسيوية التي يهيمن عليها الدين. "
